Thanks for this great app. I do have a problem though. I can use it with Photoshop and other programs, but I can't use it with Sculptris or other 3D programs. Is there some setting I need to change?

i dont think this is cheating in the slightest, and i dont put much creedence in the "tracing" thing either, in all walks of art people use various different methods of achieving their goals. some use a dual grid system some use a pencil to measure some use a frame mounted on a tripod some use tracing paper to copy "the right bits" from scribbles (something i do) this method to me is nothing more than "another method" of achieving the result you want. most if not all 3d artists have a collection of "standard models or sculpts" that they will re-use over and over again for different subjects, now whilst im not saying the model stays the same it dosnt its tweaked according to need. this method allows you to build up that set of standards that much faster than normal and for that i applaud it. an app simple in its conception a masterstroke in its execution.

Good to see I'm not the only one with that issue.

I have had a couple of people say that they have not been able to get it to work with one app or another... I can't tell you why that would be...
If you would post your symptoms, I might be able to give suggestions, but I don't know off hand why it wouldn't work for you. As you can see from the video I posted, it works with Sculptris here... so I am not sure why it isn't working there.

Hi mrkjoel60
The prob is, all is well untill you start sculptris, do the overlay button + try to model in sculptris -> the foreground pic is pushed behind the modeling application so you cant see it. In PS all works correct. To bad, because this tiny little program looks totaly promising to me. Cheers Stephan

Here the overlay starts to flicker as soon as Sculptris gets the focus (all other tested apps are no problem) When I put the focus back to your app (via task bar) all is fine again till I enter Sculptris again. Seem to be a GraCard issue here.

It flickers here too, a shame. It also breaks if i leave it at full opacity and turn Sculptris on. Seems to be OpenGL related, because blender does it too.

I have the same issue described by stephan. And, it only happens with 3D programs so I also assume it's an OpenGl issue. The problem happens on my 32 bit Win XP system. The app works on my husband's Windows 7 64 bit laptop.

Well, I can't say for sure about the OpenGL issues... can you run your graphics card in different modes? (Or is it even worth it just for one simple utility? I don't know...)
From a programming standpoint, there are two things going on that can cause problems. One is the Alpha channel in Windows. That is what I am using for the trasnparency layer. So, you might play with different settings there.
Also, My app uses the "Top Most" setting in Windows. I am not grabbing the topmost setting in a draconian way -- I am simply asking for it in the settings... I mention this because if there is another program which demands topmost status, and won't give it up, then my program won't work correctly. (This could be seen by my utility not staying on the top when you click on it in overlay mode.)
I know some people have discovered they had other programs which created a conflict. Tweak UI, from Microsoft, was one that had to have some settings changed in order for one person to use it.
I really don't know more than that...

For those of you who can use it, and find it useful, I have made some minor tweaks. I don't have time right now to do everything I want to. But this takes care of two usability issues (I hope). So changes: There is now a check box that you can select that turns the control panel on and off. So, once you have the opacity set, you can turn off the panel so it doesn't obstruct the view as much. And the F1 (Attention) button is now a toggle. It will put you in and out of the overlay mode. This sets up for the other changes which are coming (whereby you can flip through pictures and resize the image using mouse and keystrokes, etc...) The new file is here: www.digitalartistguild.com/misc/ForegroundReference_2.rar(Same "install" instructions and basic usage...)

I wish I could use this little app but I have the same flickering problem like some others here... I think it might be a driver ( ATI Radeon HD 4550 ) problem since I experience the same flickering every time I try to add transparency to programs that use openGL. it doesn't matter if I try to use transparency on the openGL program or on something that overlaps said openGL application. everytime that annoying flickering is involved...
