I need to buy a tablet and I'm looking to save cost; granted Wacom is king and bigger is better etc, how useless are the cheap tablets you get at consumer electronics stores? Is there a minimum size and or "resolution" below which it's not worth looking? It's hard to characterise Sculptris as a lower level application when it competes so well with high end sculpting applications, but in my case at least I'm looking at hobbyist level work and would prefer not to pay for full on professional level hardware. Some of the cheapest are almost worth buying and seeing how they work out, but that's just wasteful.
And I have a horrible suspicion every 3D sculpting forum has one of these threads, so I'm:
Filling that gaping hole.
Asking a question the answer to which will form a valuable resource
Being the dumb newbie asking the stupid questions
As much as I hope for the second or at least the first, I suspect I'm in the third category. And in case this has been asked and answered already, point me at it.
Someone will correct me if i'm wrong but I am under the impression that Sculptris doesn't yet support wintab, which is what most if not all of the cheaper tablets use Wacoms can be bought for a fraction more, and they are the #1 tablet manufacture with 90% of the market for a reason. Most tablets rely on a battery, the life of the battery is not an issue, but the added weight, especially towards the top of the pen makes for an odd balance in the pen Some may still use a wired pen, I owned one several years ago, it felt like it was always in the way I'm probably a bit biased as i've been using wacoms for the past 6-7 years
When it comes to sculpting amazing creatures, people, and places, there are no competitors that come anywhere even close to ZBrush.
If you do a lot of modeling, texture painting, etc then a tablet is a must and will seriously speed up your workflow about 10 times. drawing tablet is super useful for sculptris . A must if you want to take full advantage of the sculpting.
I have a XP-Pen Star 06 : www.xp-pen.com/product/49.html wireless graphics tablet . I love it for sculpting and texture painting. Vertex modeling I still prefer to do with a mouse.
