I absolutely love this program! It's a very nice piece of work. I'm amazed at how simple and intuitive it is. I've made several models with it.
I've been trying to get Sculptris Alpha 3 to run under Ubuntu Linux, using Wine. While it does mostly work, anytime I use a keyboard shortcut in Sculptris the window temporarily freezes until I shift the focus to another window, then back to Sculptris. I was wondering if anyone here has had experience running Sculptris under Wine.
Thanks! Brallion

I installed Wine on Ubuntu 64bit and it's so far one of the programs that work with the least amount of problems. I just can't use some of the shortcuts and that is liveable.

Here is an update on running Sculptris under Wine in Ubuntu.
Go to System, Preferences, Windows and select Super. Now you can use the Alt key to use the circle function for your brush size, detail, strength.
Ctrl-Alt-Z works for undo.
Hope to spend some more time on figuring out why the hotkeys freeze the screen but hey I just use the icons for now.

Does anyone know if Sculptris works faster in Wine vs Windows?

it might be hardware dependent. but i have a laptop with an nvidia chip with shared memory...
definately slower than on windows...(painful crawl on linux compared to quite nice on windows)
on my other laptop.. again an nvidia chip but with dedicated memory it seems very nippy... at least equivalent to windows maybe faster but i haven't really benchmarked that...
even though it's using opengl it's certainly not universally faster like blender;
might be the ui drawing code as switching off the button scaling in the prefs and turning off hardware shaders give a massive performance boost...

I just downloaded scultpris 1.0 and tried it under kubuntu 10.04 64 bit and wine 1.1.44.
I have also these freezes when using shortcuts. The ctrl-alt-z trick works, but all the other shortcuts do not work.
Is there any more information on this in the meanwhile ?

all shortcuts that only use "crtl", "alt" and "shift" are working.
most other shortcuts can be used by also pressing the "alt" key, this works only as long as the shortcuts are not used for another opperation in your desktop enviroment settings (kde, gnome, xfce, ...).
you can try to use tablet navigation (can be enabled in the option menü) as an alternate methode to use rotate, pan, zoom and the "size, strengh, detail" tool.
i'm nearly shure that dr. petter has a linux port on his (long) todo list, after he is back from his vacation.

For anyone else having problems running Sculptris 1.01 using Wine. Upgrade Wine to Wine 1.2-rc1. No problems except as mentioned with the Shortcut keys...

Has anyone tried the painting features in sculptris under wine?? Under MacOS X my models stay bright white and I'm not able to paint it ... some experiences here?

Everything appears to work except the keyboard. Painting too.

have you shaders enabled (can you see the materials in sculptmode)?
have you tried it with the lastest wine relase (1.2rc1), works fine for me on linux.

Hello, I've been asked to post this bug I have under wine in this thread too... so here it is: under wine (ubuntu 64 bit) I have this strange bug with version 1.1: if I first sculpt, or grab a part of the sphere moving it on the sides, then I cannot sculpt on that part of the sphere... maybe the image will be more clear about this. P.S.: alpha 3 worked perfectly. Thanks for any hint. Attachments:
