Welcome to the musagi STORYTELLING challenge thread!
Feel free to join any of the challenges and/or reflect on the outcomes. And don't hold back if you want to suggest new challenges.
The main theme here is "storytelling". And should be fairly flexible.
Sound and music always been used in, and for, storytelling. From the earliest traditions till current day. Bedtime stories, folk, opera, ballet, radio plays, rap, movie scores, computer-games and, much, much more. Sound can be mere illustration, set a mood. Sometimes reaches further and drags us along in its journey.
So... set foot in the world of Stravinsky, The War of the Worlds, Peter and the Wolf, or just illustrate your own little tale in music.
This is not a contest, just a tool to explore and relate.
(list to be expanded WIP) ------------------
cs12-00: "Path to attainment" or "Journey"
cs12-01: "The transformation"
cs12-02: "Waking up"
cs12-03: "Attempts and Failures"
cs12-04: "A day in space"
cs12-05: "The forest" or "The big tree"
cs12-06: "Love at first sight"
cs12-07: "The Visit"
cs12-08: "The Hermit"
cs12-09: "Wheel of Life"
cs12-10: "The last day"

Some suggestions for topics: "Path to attainment" or "Journey" (in light of my "Running Fool" track) "A day in space" (synthy orgy) "Attempts and Failures" "Love at first sight" "Last day" "The Visit" "Wheel of Life" "Death - or the Last, the First" "Waking up"
Just some ideas.

Thanks taron, added to the openingspost. I didnt think of any restrictions... (You know restricting your choice of instruments or time limits.) but perhaps we can come up with our own. If anyone comes up with restrictions before they start creating a song: maybe with posting your song also share those initial restrictions with us. Have fun all. Still some time till 2013.

You've said it, I think that's perfect. Just explain the restrictions you've kept making your song and it becomes it's own kind of challenge for people to follow up on. The other thing that might be welcome could be a sort of sound-template to see what people will do with the same arrangement. Just some thought. If I come up with a nice set I'll gladly post a clean template song with it. Sweet, looks great- the set of challenges! Very inspiring! Thanks!

The other thing that might be welcome could be a sort of sound-template to see what people will do with the same arrangement. Just some thought. If I come up with a nice set I'll gladly post a clean template song with it. I am not so skilled at making the exact instruments i want to make. Here is one with 3 instruments i been working on. Its just a bit dirty with lots of artifacts... for example the flute-like instrument peeks volume at G# haha... And the bell-like Phys only sounds okayish if you note it as 8th. Also there is a bit much use of reverb... If you want to give this a go and use it as template: go ahead and delete the lil doodle, (haha afther listening to it) : dl.dropbox.com/u/23734386/instru-template00.smu(t1.68) Great idea. When we have some more templates I'll put them in the openingspost.

The instruments seem to fit medieval themes, or at least that's what I make of em'. Here's what I concocted: warrior duckAlso, I've found myself using this song as a template, I'd love to see what you make of it =]

Nice one! btw i found if you put the first part of warrior duck up 3 octaves and use instr 11 on it you might be suprized to how that sounds. Cool, thanks, when I make a template section in the openingspost i'll add it.

WAAAHHHH! THIS IS SUCH GREAT STUFF, hahaha, awesome!!! ;D Boy, I love the sounds, ferryman, and think your intro there is a great starter! You should keep developing it for sure! The arrangement is too cool and the sound is altogether just so transcending musagi. I'm very, very proud of what you're doing there, hehe, if I may say so. Cool. Exciting to me for sure. And Tug, nice take, too! It screams medieval for sure, but I think Ferryman's track already hits that character quite nicely. I'm tempted to play around with that, too, hehe. Oh, man, feels good to have us come to life again, hehe.

Alright, here's my take on it: FerryTale.smuAwesome sounds! Just mini-tweak on flute for mono run. Not like any of this has much to do with the challenge anymore, except that it prepares us for things to come....hmmm...like exchanging arrangements in this case. This particular arrangement is probably the one ultimate setup to tell a little story. Which is why I would call that the "FerryTale" arrangement, hahaha... no, no, I know how fairytale is spelled, just in case that's lost in translation.

Hehe, thanks! I am pretty much sure I have build those sounds from things you did earlier. Hehe, even apart from you being the creator of some of the tools: I think i just took and pushed some instruments you made earlier into some direction with half of them. Yeah. Alright, here's my take on it: FerryTale.smuAwesome sounds! Just mini-tweak on flute for mono run. Oh, nice! You also fixed the problem with volume control on the flute-like. Good Well tugBUTs song could fit some kinda spooky child's story. Perhaps cs12-05: "The forest" or "The big tree" And yours could fit cs12-02: "Waking up" Hehe. Lol, its a bit too easy to project story titles/ideas onto music afterwards I guess. Yeah, you seem to have taken it where it belongs, hehe. Nice bit of music.

Haha, that's pretty awesome taron! I envision a village of elves making soup. It inspired me, actually. So I made another one, I think it fits quite well with yours... butterfliesI added some drums, I hope that's not against the rules...I couldn't help myself

Hehe. Dunno about rules. But I guess for the challenge you might wanna pick a title/story-idea listed in the openingspost. When I add the templates list I'll add some instructions. But they will be basically do what you think is needed.

Sweet! That is fascinating, Tug! I think your unsettling progressions really open up the music in this airy kind of way. I really like it. I'm not so happy about the drums, which is why I've made a few percussion to the FerryTale song... Just download it again, I overwrote it. So much fun trying to make that stuff sound passable.

Nice stuff, I'll add that to the template. I'll start listing them as soon as we have 3 and more. Ahh, thanks! c418 is a big inspiration to me =] I might have to make an actual entry, perhaps under "A day in space". Cool, I used your template for cs12-04: "A day in space" today. Did only set 2 instruments to mono for effect. Meant to be a musical soundscape... bit like some of the older FSOL stuff. Enjoy. Direction_Leo (Read in Cave Johnson voice)" Loosen your seatbelts, you are headed direction Leo. You may experience some drowsiness during this flight since your cooling system has been broken. Or more factually your heating system works too well. Fixing it would need a funtional oxygen refresh unit. Something we are currently looking at.... Aha, looking at it doesnt seem to do much. Well, hold in there. All we can say for sure: your vessel will be here in a day." dl.dropbox.com/u/23734386/cs12-04_-_Direction_Leo.smu
