Thanks guys, its good to be back! I see everyone's been keeping busy with tons of new work, great stuff. Qwerty2, I like your idea for the hair, I think it would help "finish" the look of the guy.
This charming fellow is going to be my super last minute entry into the Pre-Dominance War V contest on cgtalk... I have to get a 3000 triangle game character modeled and textured by mid next week... this will be interesting
There are a few people doing some sculpts, and then using them to bake out ambient occlusion / subtle lighting info. I'm gonna try that as well, it seems to give nice results, like this guy's getting. Anyhow, I do wish we could use normal maps, it would make this a lot easier.
Here's a bit of progress I made over lunch:
I'm gonna detail up the breastplate and make it look like lamellar armor. Might add samurai style shoulderpads and that "skirt" to protect the legs. I think he should use a naginata or maybe one of those huge spiked bats... that would be more consistent with what an Oni would use.
Ahh well, looks like I ran out of time... I should have started a lot earlier, because I had no room for the inevitable technical issues that popped up to delay me
Anyhow, here's how far I got along:
Currently I'm in the process of using xNormal to bake out highres ambient occlusion, cavity, and curvature maps to use as a base for my diffuse color map. Even though the contest is over, I'm going to stick to the rules and not make normal maps, although it is tempting...
I bashed this one out over lunch today, probably about 45min of work into it. I didn't use any reference, so there's a lot of inaccuracies but nothing I can't fix quick once I get home
Thats great for such a fast doodle. I would think it could not be done so fast... till this year when I found sculptris, haha. It indeed feels a bit problematic but i cant put my finger on it, great anyway.
Theferrymanhymn, I agree totally. Sculptris makes working fast so easy that I can't believe what kind of results can be had quickly. Well, I should qualify that... On a good machine it easy to work fast.
I'm visiting my parents for the holidays, and have only my weak little netbook to play with. It took an hour of on and off work to do some tweaks, and there's still a lot I want to modify, but I think I'll save it for when I get back to my real computer ;D
Human/Gelfling hybrid... Bring up the lips to give her a bit more realism, but it would be pandora's box. There are a number of stylish choices, which make it what it is, but keep it from being a fullblooded she.
I hope you don't mind!? I couldn't resist and was too curious myself. I just used photoshop's liquify and adjusted the mouth, the ears and the eyes a bit. Starts to look like a pretty woman, I think. You've got it all there already! Just tiny tweaks...
...and, please, forgive me for doing that. I hope you're not angry. If you are, I can always delete the post again. I've got the power (daddaddaaaa dud dud dud...)
