Yeh just bought this myself. Couldn't pass up that sale price. Was so impressed at my first render with no setup time at all that I had to get it. It's ashame it doesn't have sss and do displacement maps, but the character test rendered I did still seemed to have life to it. Just check out the gallery for a great example.
Also thinking about entering the Octane competition with a character...
I've checked many free render options that where available out there including extended testing of luxrender, yafaray, povray, pixie and did some anim renders on SmallLuxGPU( openCL platform) but nothing can be compared to the power of octane render. Its my first commecial software I bought and I dont regret the buy one bit. And I'll tell you when I saw my 1000 frame, 40000 vertex, 1024 samples per pixel animation rendered in pathtracing mode in one night I was blown away! PS. Theres still some features missing like area lights, mesh emitters and alpha channel rendering but the octane team say there gonna be available in the upcoming 2.3 release of the beta
Did any one try Octane Power Tools www.OctanePowerTools.com ? It completes some missing features of Octane Render specially in the animation part. It's also on 50% discount for this week! By the way there is an SSS trick posted on Octane Render forum lately, so my opinion with the right tools limitations can be overcome and complicated projects can be done in no time with those GPU renderers!
